Earth Science Partnership Airwall Technology is a method of ground gas containment and remediation. It involves controlling the movement of ground gasses and vapours by manipulating the air pressures and flows within the ground.
This is done by installing a series of air injection points into the ground to a depth which will have maximum effect on the ground gas, and blocking off primary flow pathways. The pressure can be controlled so it directs ground gasses towards a venting point, where the gasses can be extracted for treatment.
In the first commercial application, Airwall was implemented at a site where methane concentrations were at 25% and where existing traditional barriers had failed. Following installation and rapid modification of the ground gas regime, over 400 residential properties were constructed under the protection of the Airwall (and continue to be).

Case Study 1: Airwall System
ESP delivered specialist ground gas control solutions using Airwall technology to manage landfill gas risks at contaminated sites, providing an engineered alternative to conventional gas protection systems.
We undertook detailed site investigation and gas pathway assessment, including pressure testing and tracer gas methods, to identify potential migration routes and inform system design.
Our work supported the design, verification and performance monitoring of Airwall systems, ensuring effective ground gas containment, demonstrable performance and long-term protection of end users and development infrastructure.

I am a UK Registered Ground Engineering Specialist and Chartered Engineering & Environmental Geologist with significant experience in Site Hazard Assessment, Remediation, Design, and Implementation across the Geoenvironmental and Geotechnical sectors in the UK and abroad.
I often work in multi-disciplinary teams advising other engineering and design professionals on the implications of ground hazards.
My work involves undertaking design, planning, management, and reporting of ground investigations. For example investigations for new developments and many bespoke studies including:
- Assessment of hydrogeological settings, materials for earthworks.
- Impact of abandoned mine workings.
- Remediation and stability assessment of soil and rock slopes/landslides, most notably the Pantteg Landslide in the Swansea Valley for which I have guided and presented assessments to Local Authority officers and the general public.
