Following an earlier review of its effectiveness and robustness, the government has opened a second consultation on options to reform Land Remediation Relief: Consultation on Reforming Land Remediation Relief - GOV.UK. The consultation seeks views on the timing of the relief, how eligible contamination expenses align with planning processes and how relief should apply to long-term derelict land.
The government has identified areas where LRR could better encourage the remediation of brownfield and contaminated land. This consultation examines whether the proposed reforms would be viable and effective, both individually and together. It asks how far the options address current shortcomings, what issues they may raise, their impact on different businesses and developers and how they could be implemented in practice. Comments are invited by 21st September 2026 and can be emailed to LRR@hmtreasury.gov.uk.
