ESP’s Danilo and Becky recently visited the former Tower Colliery in Hirwaun where they zip lined down Rhigos Mountain, across the Llyn Fawr reservoir and witnessed the breath-taking views of the Cynon Valley.
The former colliery has an interesting past, it was the oldest continuously working deep coal mine in the UK before closing in 2008 due to running out of coal to mine. It was the last of its kind in the South Wales Valleys and was the first coal mine to be owned by the workers.
The miners raised the deposit needed to secure the purchase of the colliery after British Coal closed it in 1994. Once the deposit was accepted, the miners celebrated and marched to the pit. Mining recommenced in January 1995.
Now, the former Tower Colliery is home to Zip World where Danilo and Becky braved the fastest seated zip line in the world, the Phoenix Zip Line.
