Former School Redevelopment, Cowbridge

We initially reviewed of our previous investigation findings, which were then supplemented by a contemporary phase of ground investigation following demolition of the school. The supplementary phase of works comprised trial pits, windowless sampling, construction of ground gas monitoring wells and additional laboratory testing.

A ground model comprising Made Ground and demolition arisings, underlain by the Marginal Facies of the Mercia Mudstone Group was identified. No extraordinary evidence of contamination or geohazards such as solution features were identified during the investigation.

During the demolition works, a historic well was identified below a former floor slab and recorded to be an empty void to at least 8m. Following discussions and recommendations presented to the Client, we implemented additional work to investigate the depth and geometry of the well, which was undertaken via rotary probe holes. The well was proven to be around 1.1m in diameter and around 11m deep.

Following all supplementary investigation works, including review of historic data, we provided a comprehensive assessment of potential contamination and geohazards, such a solution features. Advice has been provided on the treatment of and reduction of risk posed to the scheme by the historic well, and we continue to provide advice and support on this element, with further investigation and treatment proposed.

As part of this project we implemented a contemporary review and expansion of existing geoenvironmental and geotechnical information, the provision of detailed risk assessments for the site, and conclusion with recommendations, to allow the scheme to be finalised.
