ESP have worked with Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council on this project for around 15-years, providing professional services for flood risk Assessment, site investigation for housing and school redevelopments and supporting expert advice to assist in land negotiations; most recently providing input for value engineering of remediation proposals.
In addition to extensive feasibility studies undertaken to support the client through the Public Inquiry, ESP have also collaborated with Alun Griffiths Contractors and Mott MacDonald to implement site investigation works for the new spine road and bridge crossing. The Welsh government and Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council have put combined investment of £8.2M into flood protection, a new access road, bridge and footbridge that reconnect the communities of Merthyr Vale and Aberfan, and a new waste recycling centre. Combined with a new community primary school opened in 2012 and further works to move existing homes out of a high-risk flood zone, this is known as Project Riverside.
We continue to work with our client and their preferred development partner, Lovell Partnerships, to refine the remediation proposals, drainage proposals, and resulting contractual values, allowing the residential phase of Project Riverside to commence.
