“The Knap” is located at Cold Knap Point, south of Barry. It currently comprises an area of open land bordered by a water works, electrical infrastructure and recreational spaces operated by the Local Authority. We initially reviewed available geological and historical information, supplemented by a contemporary phase of ground investigation. A review of historical information indicated that the site had previously been occupied by a boat house associated with the life boat service. Immediately adjacent to the site, a former lido (swimming pool), supporting infrastructure and a man-made lake were present from the early 1930s. The lido/pool was infilled in the early 2000’s with the lake remaining.
The Ground Model comprised Made Ground, underlain by a thin horizon of Alluvium and the Blackrock Limestone Formation bedrock, with no groundwater identified within the top 2m. Whilst a thin cover of Made Ground was present, no obvious sources of contamination were identified, and laboratory testing has indicated generally low levels of contamination.
We provided the Client and design team with a comprehensive ground investigation and assessment including recommendations for founding the swift tower in the shallow bedrock and consideration of the impact of snow/wind loading on the presumed bearing values being utilised. Recommendations were also provided with regard to the consideration of general ground gas and radon, should any permanent or occupiable structures be included in any scheme revision.
Our findings and conclusions allowed design to be competed with no further investigation or assessment recommended. The works were completed within budget and in an accelerated time frame to allow commencement of the scheme.
