CELEBRATING WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION WEEK (March 2nd-6th) & International Women’s Day

Organised by The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), this year’s Women in Construction Week is being celebrated across the sector with a focus on the theme ‘Level Up, Build Strong’.

International Women’s Day (8th March) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality.

Women in Construction Week  ( 2nd – 6th March) is a nationwide initiative founded by the National Association of Women in Construction, it brings together national webinars, local chapter events, and regional programs to spotlight the contributions of women in the industry. Programming covers industry trends, ethical workplace practices, career advancement, and negotiation strategies, providing actionable tools for professionals across the construction field.

Here at ESP we are proud to be a predominantly female workforce. We spoke to some of our employees and this is what they had to say…..

Gabriella Rossi – Graduate Engineering Geologist

Growing up, I was aware of how male-dominated the construction industry has been, and still is. I am very proud to be part of the evolution of the industry as I start my career in construction, and being the change I want to see in the world. There is still a lot of work to do, but I believe every day is a step forward.

I am especially thankful for all the men and women who not only embrace women in the industry, but actively encourage and provide support for us. It takes everyone working together to push the industry forward!

Since working for ESP, I’ve been given support and advice on navigating hurdles that my male-counter parts may not face, and although this can be frustrating at times, these proactive conversations are evidence of an industry changing for the better. Since joining the team, I thoroughly enjoy being on site and am very excited for future in construction.

This year I have started my career as a Graduate Engineering Geologist for ESP. Through every stage of getting here, I have been inspired and supported by incredible women, from my geography teachers, geology lectures and industry professionals. All of which, have always been passionate about their work, acknowledge challenges women may face but most importantly champion women in geoscience.

From attending Plymouths University’s ‘Girls in Geoscience day’ in 2017, to my A-level geology teachers going above and beyond to get us as much field experience as possible, these experiences and these women have helped shape my path into the geo-sector. It is so important we continue to support and encourage the next generation of women into geoscience!

Since starting my career at ESP it has been a fantastic environment to learn in as I am surrounded and inspired by lots of incredibly smart and talented women, and supported by men who champion women in the geo-sector! I love being on site, getting muddy, and getting the job done!

Becky Cross – Business Manager

Working in Engineering Geology continues to be one of the most rewarding parts of my career. Every project brings new challenges – unexpected ground conditions, evolving sustainability requirements, or innovative design approaches – and each one pushes us to think creatively. It’s also great engaging with clients and developers who are changing the way in which we approach development, to promote a more sustainable, inclusive future in construction.

Since joining the leadership group, I’ve become even more aware of how important representation and support are within our industry. Women bring valuable insight and perspective to construction and I’m committed to creating an environment where women feel confident pursuing careers in geosciences and to help create pathways that make our sector more inclusive, visible, and accessible.

Our industry is evolving – embracing sustainability, digital innovation and new ways of working – and diverse leadership is essential to driving that progress.

For anyone considering entering our field, my advice is: don’t underestimate what you’re able to bring. Experience grows with time but curiosity, determination and a willingness to learn are just as important. Many companies, including ESP, offer excellent training routes and support networks that help people build successful, long‑term careers in Engineering Geology.

Emma Kirk, Senior Engineering Geologist

Engineering geology was not a discipline I was aware of until I had begun my university career, it is a specialty I fell into by lucky coincidence, and one I am incredibly glad I found.

Over the past decade, working as an Engineering Geologist within ESP, my career has spanned a diverse range of environments and projects. No two days are the same, whether I’m in the office interpreting ground investigation data or standing at the heart of a live construction project, problem solving in real time alongside colleagues from across multiple disciplines. It’s a career that consistently challenges and surprises me.

In recent years, joining ESP’s Leadership Group has been a hugely rewarding step, and one that has reinforced how important it is for women to have a visible presence at every level of the construction and geotechnical industries, not just on site or in technical roles, but in the rooms where decisions are made.

My advice to anyone pursuing a career in this industry is to have confidence in yourself and your expertise, while also being honest about your weaknesses. The right environment will welcome questions, harness ambition, and help you grow.
